An Aviation Battalion at Fort Wainwright will be serving overseas on a 9 month tour of duty as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Soldiers from 1-52 Aviation Regiment have begun to leave the base this week in preparation for their time overseas.
According to Army Officials they will be supporting ground troops in numerous missions during their time deployed as the Aviation Regiment, specializes in medevac'ing soldiers, and moving leaders and supplies around the battlefield.
The Pentagon may withdraw American troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year, which means this deployment to the region could be one of the last.
The battalion commander says with the potential draw down, ground forces will rely heavily on aviation.
About 400 troops from the regiment will deploy and will be joined by other soldiers in the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade from other bases such as Joint Base Lewis Mcchord.
