AST Citizen Academy takes shape in Fairbanks.

Beginning Thursday evening, Fairbanks will become the third community to have an Alaska State Trooper Citizen Academy, aimed at

"promoting and enhancing people's understanding and awareness of the role of Troopers."

Officials say the AST Citizen Academy Program already has seen success in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and a similar session

began in Soldotna earlier in the week.

They say this is the first AST Citizen Academy being offered in Fairbanks.

The AST Program is based on a Citizen Police Academy model being formed by police agencies throughout the country.

The Academy is intended to "open lines of communication between the community and law enforcement, and help expand a police agency's

community-based efforts.
