Army Officials announce Fort Wainwright will gain soldiers through 2015

United States Army Officials have announced a structure change that will affect both Fort Wainwright and Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson.

Fort Wainwright will gain approximately 367 soldiers by the year 2015 bringing the total number of soldiers stationed here to 6,198.

As part of the gain a newly formed Engineer Battalion will be added to the Stryker Brigade.

JBER however will be reduced by 780 soldiers, leaving a total of 4,598 stationed at the Army Base in Anchorage.

As the Newscenter reported in June of last year, Army officials planned to reduce troops by nearly 80 thousand through the year 2017 as part of an Army-wide restructuring effort.

USARAK officials say, this is a good sign for the strategic importance of Alaska.

USARAK Spokesperson, Ltc. Alan Brown said, “It’s a good sign; a reflection of the strategic importance and it’s a clear reflection of the amount of support Alaskans provide.”
