FAIRBANKS, AK-The GCI Open North American Championship sled dog race which ended this weekend in Fairbanks has a new champions for the first time in five years.
This year's champ in sprint dog mushing is Arleigh Reynolds. This Salcha veterinarian won his first Open American Championship with the fastest time over the three day event.
Reynolds finished in three hours, 32 minutes, and 50 and a half seconds. Reynolds beat out Ken Chezik of Michigan by three minutes Reynolds won Friday's 20 mile race by 22 seconds and on Saturday he closed with a strong sprint from his dogs, winning by over two minutes. Then on Sunday Reynolds finished the 27 mile race just under 90 minutes.
Egil Ellis, the 12 time champ including the last five Open Norths finished in third. Greg Sellentin of Willow was fourth and Mark Hartum of Alberta completed the top five mushers for this year's race.
