FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Nanooks student athletic programs are again among the best in the country. UAF is ranked 44th overall in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup for NCAA Division II schools. The Nooks are in the top 15 percent of the 315 Division II programs for the second time in 3 years.
Alaska got a boost after the winter teams were no lower than 14th in their national championship appearances. The UAF Rifle team was this year's national runner-up. The ski team placed 10th in the NCAA Skiing Championships while the swim team had their best finish at the NCAA Swim and Dive Championships finishing 14th.
Those three sports got 211.5 points which was second to only UAA in the winter among GNAC schools. UAA is actually ranked 5th for the Director's Cup.
Points for this Director's Cup are earned based on how schools finish in 14 sports, seven men and seven women's sports.
The Cup is a partnership between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today.
