FAIRBANKS-Last night in the Patty Center was the first day of the GCI Alaska Invitational Tournament. Fresno Pacific beat Emporia State 72-70 in the opener but Joe Slocum and the Nanooks didn't want their game to be that close.

Slocum led the Nanooks in the first with 16 points on 5-7 shooting in the first half. He finished with a game 18 and six steals which ties a single game tournament record.

All five starters scored in double digits and all UAF players who got in scored as the Nanooks win their home opener 84-57 over the University of Mary. The Nooks led 36-26 at halftime hitting six treys. They would nail 11 of them. Their largest lead was 30.

The Nanooks face Emporia State tonight at 7 p.m.
