The air force plans to release its draft environmental impact statement tomorrow on the proposal to relocate jet fighters from Eielson Air Force base to Anchorage.
The E I S addresses the potential effects that moving the 18th Aggressor squadron to Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson would have on local economies.
The document will be available for public review and comment until July 30.
In addition to the Environmental Impact Statement, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley directed Pacific Air Forces to prepare a strategic assessment, which is expected to be finished this fall.
The Draft EIS will be available on May 31 for download and at several locations locally, and in hard copy format at area libraries.
The plan can be downloaded at www.alaskaf-16eis.com and may be reviewed in hard copy format at the following locations:
* Fairbanks Area: Eielson AFB Library, Fairbanks North Star Borough/Noel Wien Public Library and North Pole Branch, and the University of Alaska Library.
* Anchorage Area: Alaska Resources Library and Information Services, Alaska State Court Law Library, Z. J. Loussac Public Library, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Library, Chugiak-Eagle River Branch Library, Eagle Public Library, Mountain View Branch Library, Muldoon Branch Library, Palmer Public Library, and Wasilla Public Library.
* Juneau: Alaska State Library and Historical Collections.
The Air Force will also hold public hearings in Palmer (Alaska State Fairgrounds) and Anchorage (Clark Middle School) on 17 and 18 Jun, respectively, and in Fairbanks (Westmark Hotel and Conference Center) and North Pole (North Pole Elementary School) on 19 and 20 Jun, respectively, to receive additional comments from the public on the proposal.
